HEALTHY EATING ON-THE-GO
July 25, 2023By Katie Chatfield, MPH, RDN, LD, CCNP, Nutrition Manager
We’re in the dog days of summer. Temps are high, days are long and children can get restless. But it’s still important to get those kiddos outside! In fact, eating meals outdoors or on-the-go is a great way to get outside and practice healthy meal planning all at once.
Planning a Picnic
Start by choosing an outdoor location, like a park or beach or even your backyard, for your picnic. Pack a blanket or picnic mat that is big enough for the children to sit on and enjoy your meal or snack. You can always bring a few of these! Prepare delicious and easy-to-eat foods, and don't forget to bring drinks and water to stay hydrated.
Easy to make, easy to transport
Now that you’ve got the idea and the locale, what are we eating? When we think about going on a picnic, most people think of sandwiches. There are many ways to plan a healthy picnic with more creative options than turkey on bread. Here are just a few recipes we recommend that are both healthy and perfect for on-the-go!
Sweet Swirl Wraps - simple and tasty for a picnic lunch
Black Bean Salad – pair this with whole grain tortilla chips for a snack
Chicken Pepper Popper – wrap this in a whole grain tortilla, or serve as a dip with whole grain crackers
Berry Blast Smoothie – keep it in mason jars for easy transport!
Sweet Potato Crisps – kids love this super portable and non-refrigerated snack
Happy on-the-go eating!
